Research

I am a physical oceanographer (CNRS researcher at University Grenoble Alpes - IGE). The aim of my research is centered around several key questions that I believe to be of prime importance to oceanography and climate dynamics. My work focuses on ocean-atmosphere interactions, mesoscale structures, oceanic intrinsic variability, and atmospheric weather regimes. To address these questions, my approach is to proceed systematically from theory and process oriented studies to regionally embedded, fine scale primitive equation modeling. Specifically, my current research projects include:

  • Building and understanding the physics of a multiple scale ocean model (that combines planetary and quasi-geostrophic physics),
  • Identifying and characterizing the ocean low-frequency variability in idealized and realistic ocean models,
  • Understanding the eddy-topography interaction.

Teaching

I am a part-time assistant professor at Ecole Polytechnique, working in the Department of Mechanics. My role involves teaching lab experiments to small groups of two students, focusing on environmental flows like gravity currents, wave propagation, plume dynamics… We explore important concepts such as non-dimensional numbers, self-similarity, and scaling laws.

Additionally, I collaborate with A. Tantet to teach "Machine Learning for Climate and Energy". In this class, our teaching approach involves using accessible notebooks to introduce students to statistical learning. We draw examples from real climate datasets to make the concepts more tangible. As the course progresses, we delve into fully connected neural networks, providing students with practical insights into the application of machine learning in the context of climate and energy.

I also taught "Physical Oceanography" at Ecole Normale Supérieure, "Dynamics of Atmosphere and Oceans" and "Boundary layer Meteorology" "at Ecole Polytechnique (see lecture notes below).
